The Black River Astronomical Society has been dedicated to community outreach and educational programming to the greater Lorain County area since 1949.
We are a group of curious, lifelong learners, who are passionate about sharing astronomical science with those around us.
Monthly meetings are free and open to the community!
Please join us the first Wednesday of every month.
Check the calendar for the status of our events
Monthly meetings are typically held at the Carlisle Reservation Visitor Center at 12882 Diagonal Road, LaGrange, Ohio 44050.
On occasion, the Black River Astronomical Society must make other location arrangements for the monthly member meeting, so be sure to check our calendar and/or Facebook for the most up-to-date information.
Public and member-only viewing takes place monthly at the Nielson Observatory
The Nielsen Observatory is located at 13630 Diagonal Road, LaGrange, Ohio 44050.
Visitors should follow the entrance to the Equestrian Center within Carlisle Reservation, to find parking on the East, and the Observatory on the West.
We usually hold two observing sessions monthly in the warmer months and one observing session in colder, cloudy months. We also host solar observing sessions with special Hydrogen-alpha filters in the warmer months, which circulates among the different Lorain County Metroparks.
